Getting started

Three steps and you’re in.

Check your account, join the test, then install. We’ll take it one step at a time.

    Check your Google account

    On your Android device, open the Play Store and tap your profile picture to check the account. Use this same account in your browser when joining the test. For an invitation, it must be the account the developer added.

    Join the test

    Choose your access method below and follow the matching instructions.

    How are you joining the test?

    Open the developer’s testing link

    Use the Google account the developer invited. Open their testing link and select the option to become a tester. A link alone does not grant access to an internal or closed test.

    The developer shares the link; do not wait for a separate automatic invitation from Google Play.

    Privacy noteThe developer may already have your email on the tester list. Check the app’s privacy policy before using it.

    If it does not workIf access is denied, check the account in both your browser and Play Store, then ask the developer to confirm you are on the tester list.

    Tip: keep the same Google account throughout these steps.

    Install or update the app

    After opting in, follow the Google Play download link on the testing page. Install the app, or update it if you already have it. The app will appear with your other apps.

    The beta may take a little time to appear. If it does not, check your account and ask the developer.

Once it’s installed

Now comes the helpful part.

Follow the developer’s testing instructions if provided. Otherwise, use the app as you normally would. Your everyday experience makes your feedback valuable.

Use it normally

Try the app as you usually would. Explore it and notice anything confusing or unexpected.

Keep it updated

Get updates from the Google Play Store. Open the app’s listing and tap Update, or enable automatic updates.

Share feedback

Use the developer’s feedback contact. Open and closed tests can also offer private feedback through Google Play. Describe what happened and what you expected.

Good to know

Beta apps work a little differently.

  • A beta may have bugs or change between updates. Back up anything important.
  • A beta can replace the public version of the same app while you test.
  • Paid apps and in-app purchases may cost money. Testing does not automatically make purchases free.
  • Leaving a beta and reinstalling the public version can erase local app data.

Do I need to install a testing app?

No. For Google Play internal, closed, and open testing, join through the testing link and install from the Play Store. These instructions do not cover APK files or internal app sharing.

I can’t find the invitation email.

Ask the developer for the Google Play testing link and confirm the account they added. Check your spam folder for their message; a separate Google Play invitation email is not required.

Why can’t I install the beta?

Check that your browser and Play Store use the invited account. For group access, join the group before opting in. The test may be full, unavailable in your country, incompatible with your device, or still being published. Ask the developer if you are unsure.

I joined the group. Am I a tester now?

Not yet. Once your group membership is approved, open the Google Play testing link with that same account and opt in. Then follow the download link.

What information can the developer see?

The developer may know your email from their invitation list or group. Google states that data about your device, app usage, and actions you take in the app is collected and shared with the developer to help improve it. Private beta feedback is also shared with the developer. Review the app’s privacy policy for other data it collects; testing is not necessarily anonymous.

How do I stop testing?

Use the option to leave on the testing page, or the beta section of the Play Store listing when available. To return to the public version, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app. Back up important data first, as local data or beta progress may be lost. If no public version exists, ask the developer.
